In the US, ILP
has chapters and interest groups in 7 major metropolitan areas including the
California Bay Area. ILP is a volunteer-based organization with minimal
administrative expenses, having over 250 volunteers in the US, concentrating
its efforts on building awareness for the importance of education and raising
funds for literacy and empowerment programs. ILP has extended its reach to
the most rural and remote parts of India and its support has benefited over
100,000 women and children since inception in 1990. All donations to ILP are
100% tax deductible under Section 501(c)3 of the IRS code (Tax Id 36-3779020) ILP encourages expansion. A chapter usually
starts with 3-4 people who believe in the cause of literacy. Usually the
first set of volunteers need to put in at least 2 hours a week and some time
to follow up actions. Over a period of time when more volunteers join,
delegation is possible and the time commitment stabilizes For more information on
India Literacy Project, please visit http://www.ilpnet.org/ ABOUT ILP Hyderabad The creation of
ILP Hyderabad happened when we were introduced to ILP Bangalore by Manmohan
Jain’s good friend Srinivas. Some of us had
already been talking about “doing something” that went beyond token
charity—something that would stretch our talents and use our “privileged”
backgrounds to the advantage of those for whom this extra stimulation could
open doors. After a few
meetings, school visits and very helpful communication with Sindhu Naik of
the Bangalore Chapter, we were able to come up with a mission statement. ILP Hyderabad
aims to promote literacy through the reading habit. We would all agree that
Reading not only creates a more literate society—but also a more opinionated
one. It also helps to foster a value system and of course empowers children
with a leisure activity that is parallel to none. It opens vistas, expands
knowledge and builds dreams. To this effect we
started our first project with a methodology that requires volunteers to read
stories, attract attention to print and excite interest in storybooks. A detailed
note on this methodology and its rationale is available on request. As with any
effort, it’s the people who nourish the spirit of the action. ILP Hyderabad,
welcomes new volunteers, suggestions and ideas that will enable it to make a
real difference in the lives of a few. |
